Conductor and artistic leader Erin Freeman maintains a dynamic national and international presence through guest engagements and four major leadership positions: Director of the Saint Louis Symphony Chorus, Artistic Director of The City Choir of Washington, Artistic Director of Wintergreen Music, and Principal Conductor of the Richmond Ballet.

Freeman’s broad guest conducting highlights include the New York City Ballet, Detroit Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic, The Washington Ballet, Virginia Symphony, and the Mozarteum Brasileiro Academic Orchestra. She has conducted and prepared ensembles at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Boston Symphony Hall, London’s Cadogan Hall, Vienna’s Musikverein, Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts, and the Kennedy Center. Previously, she served as Director of the award-winning Richmond Symphony Chorus and Associate Conductor of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra, leading or preparing the chorus for multiple recordings, including the 2019 GRAMMY-nominated release of Mason Bates’ Children of Adam.

Recent seasons highlight Freeman’s extraordinary range across symphonic, choral, and ballet repertoire. For the Saint Louis Symphony Chorus, she prepared major masterworks including Britten’s War Requiem, Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé, and the world premiere of Kevin Puts’ The House of Tomorrow featuring Joyce DiDonato. With The City Choir of Washington, she led an international tour to Brazil performing Beethoven’s Mass in C; conducted Haydn’s The Creation, Bizet’s Carmen, and Meredith Willson’s The Music Man with the Washington National Opera Orchestra; and concluded the 2025–2026 season with a sold-out performance of Bach’s B Minor Mass. Additional recent podium appearances featured Giselle, Cinderella, and Carmina Burana with the Richmond Ballet, and Coppélia with the Toledo Ballet, alongside her summer leadership of Wintergreen Music featuring lectures, teaching, and four performances with repertoire ranging from jazz standards to Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances.

In her upcoming season, Freeman expands her work with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, preparing the chorus for Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms, Mahler’s Symphony No. 3, Poulenc’s Gloria, and Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass, while also conducting the orchestra in three performances, including the chorus's 50th Anniversary Celebration and the Mercy Holiday Pops with Norm Lewis. With The City Choir of Washington, she conducts Mozart’s Solemn Vespers, Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy, Vaughan Williams’ A Sea Symphony alongside the Washington National Opera Orchestra, the East Coast premiere of Tarik O’Regan’s Critical Mass, and a world premiere by Robert Shafer. She also conducts the Richmond Ballet in Tchaikovsky: The Man Behind the Music and The Nutcracker, returns to the Toledo Ballet for The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, and leads Berkshire Choral International in Britten’s War Requiem.

A recent finalist for Performance Today’s Classical Woman of the Year, Freeman was named one of Virginia Lawyers Weekly’s "50 Most Influential Women in Virginia" and an "Extraordinary Woman Leader" by the VCU School of Business. She holds degrees from Northwestern University (BMus), Boston University (MM), and the Peabody Conservatory (DMA).
