“Shortly after it was announced that I would become the Director of the Richmond Symphony Chorus, I had the opportunity to hear them in a performance of Brahms’ Requiem. Never have I felt so connected to the last movement, for which Brahms chose the text “Yea, saith the spirit, that they rest from their labors, and their works shall follow them.” To follow James Erb, Founder of the chorus and Director for 30 years, and Robert Shaw, for whom the chorus was formed, would be a daunting task. I wept during that movement, at the beauty and the challenge. How would I ensure that the work of Dr. Erb and Mr. Shaw would follow after them? Once I began working with the talented and dedicated singers of the ensemble, however, it became clear. They carried and still carry the great weight of the double legacy. It is an honor to guide them through repertoire from Mahler to Bernstein. ” – Erin |
